Subject: Maximum Directory Entries with NetWare 286
Date: October 31, 1990

GENERAL
INFORMATION: According to engineering, there is a maximum number of
directory entries per physical drive that NetWare 286 can
support. As we know, the maximum per volume is 32,000.
There is also a maximum per physical disk that is somewhere
around 32,000 per volume up to 800MB. If the drive is more
than 800MB, the maximum per volume will be less than 32,000.
This means that if you have a 1.2GB drive, you can not have
32,000 directory entries for every volume. The current
version of NETGEN will let you set it up that way, but you
will run into problems generally bringing the file server
up. A new NINSTALL is available on NetWire that will not
allow you to install more than 31,000 per volume using
NETGEN on a large drive.
The problem is that there is a limited amount of disk space
available on the drive that has been allocated for the VIT
(Volume Information Table). Therefore you can have multiple
smaller drives and not run into the same problem as with one
large drive.
We have spoken with two customers who have had 1.2GB drives
and their systems won't work when they hit somewhere around
64,000 total directory entries per physical disk.
